REPORT FROM THE FINALS FESTIVAL AT OUNDLE
Derbyshire were quickly in desperate trouble against Middlesex as they were reduced to 18-5. Captain and opener Joseph Cain could only watch from one end as this carnage took place. He was eventually supported by George Hodson-Walker (18) and they took the score to 83-6. Joseph went on to score 72 and was eventually last man out as Derbyshire were bowled out for 137. In reply Middlesex were made to work very hard and with three quick wickets falling were reduced to 96-6. At this stage skipper Adam Rossington (53*) was joined by Hamzah Khan (20*) and this pair guided their side home with three overs to spare. In the other Semi-Final Devon batted first and after losing both openers cheaply Alex Brown (40) and Barney Huxtable (34) repaired the damage and laid the foundations for a good score. Connor Bryan (31*) and Cameron Grainger (17*) had an unbroken partnership of 49 to make the final total 194-8. Mark Deed (4-44) and Lewys Hill (4-21) were the pick of the Cambridgeshire bowlers. In reply only Cambridgeshire captain Paul Summerskill (55) and opener Jack Hastings (27) reached double figures as they were bowled out for 105 leaving Derbyshire winners by 89 runs.
The Sunday saw the start delayed until 1 o’clock due to torrential overnight rain with the matches reduced to 40 overs a side. In the Final the Middlesex innings was built around key contributions from Adam Rossington (44) and Sean Ventham (49) with Dan Winsor taking 3-27. Their innings closed on 164-8. Devon chased down the Middlesex total and were always in contention. Tapan Patel was the pick of the bowlers with 3-27 and Ali Birkby took 2-22. Will Steward (57) led the Devon run chase but crucially was out just as it looked as if he was guiding his side home. The last ball saw Devon needing three to win but they were only able to scamper a single into the off-side and lost by the narrowest possible margin. This was a great climax to a superb weekend’s cricket in both the U13 & U15 age groups.
In the 3rd Place Play-off Derbyshire scored 149 with Gareth Davies (42) top scoring. Gareth then picked up the best bowling of the match with 4-14 as Cambridgeshire were hustled out for 114. Derbyshire winning by 35 runs.
